The matte glaze and the petal motif on the lid of this shiboridashi ceramic Japanese teapot lend it an elegant, serene appearance. Designed as a small, handleless pot with a tightly fitting lid, this shiboridashi is often used for high-quality green teas, especially those brewed at lower temperatures, like gyokuro or sencha. Instead of a conventional strainer, it features carved grooves near the spout, which allow the tea’s flavor to fully develop.

Because the teapot transfers heat readily, it’s ideally suited for lower-temperature brewing. That said, it’s also versatile enough for Chinese and black teas, offering a modern yet tranquil tea experience.

To use, place about 1 teaspoon of tea leaves per person into the shiboridashi, pour water at around 60°C (140°F), and let it steep for about 1 minute. Finally, hold down the lid and gently pour the tea into your cup for a perfectly balanced brew.

A tea strainer is not necessary because the spout has a jagged edge to prevent tea leaves from getting into the teacup.

It is also suitable for brewing Chinese teas with large tea leaves, in which case, boiling water is used. When holding it, use a dish towel to avoid burns.

Recommended to pair this with RYOUKA Usuki Japanese teacup. If you have a set of them, you will have a more wonderful and authentic teatime.
